Level Placement

Level placement is determined by NMBC’s professional faculty’s assessment of several factors: technical ability, age, maturity, focus, consistent attendance, and work ethic in class. Class levels include creative movement, pre-ballet, ballet 1–4, pre-pointe, pointe A, and pointe B. Levels for other styles of dance (tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop) will be determined by age and ability, and may not match a dancer’s ballet class level. Students may advance to the next level only with faculty approval and when they have completed curriculum requirements for the current level.

Dress Code

Proper dance attire reflecting the identity of the individual student should be clean and professional for all classes and rehearsals. Dancewear should be form fitting and not hinder movement or hide body lines so instructors can give effective feedback on alignment and technique.

Examples:

  • Ballet & Pointe Classes
    • Black leotard, convertible or footed tights (traditional pink or matching skin tone)
    • Skirts and shorts may be worn for pointe class, when personally necessary, or at the instructor’s discretion
    • White or black fitted t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/dance pants, ballet slippers
    • Warm-ups may be worn for pliés & tendus or at the instructor’s discretion.
    • Colored leotards may be worn during the last week of the month.
    • Hair must be secured out of the face in a classical bun or similar style. No ponytails.
