Get to Know Matthew Torres
Matthew was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He began dancing in 2002 at the age of 9 with elite Dance Studio where he gained experience in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip-hop, and tap. He performed in many of elite’s original productions and competed locally and nationally with the elite Dance Company. Matthew began dancing with New Mexico Ballet Company the summer of 2014 after a one-year dance hiatus. Since then has performed in NMBC’s productions of The Nutcracker

, as well as several guest performances. Matthew was with the company for three seasons until he decided to take on the challenge of Head Coach for the Valley High School Vikettes Dance Team, his alma mater, from 2017-2019. During his first season, the team won its sixth straight Albuquerque Metro Championship in 2017 and its sixth straight NMAA State Championship in 2018. In his second season, the team tied for first at the 2019 NMAA State Championship and was awarded Runner-up. After two years, Matthew decided to resign from coaching and continue dancing with NMBC where he is now in his official 4th season. In addition to working full time and dancing, Matthew teaches ballet and technique classes at a local studio in Albuquerque, serves on the production team at Copper Pointe Church, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a prelaw concentration and psychology minor from the University of New Mexico.
